Celebrating AAPI Month with Chef Danny Bowien

AAPI Heritage Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions Asian American and Pacific Island Americans have made to the United States. We strive to make an impact in the fashion and retail space and this month is an opportunity to amplify our support of our inclusive and diverse communities.

We’re inviting customers to celebrate AAPI Month and enjoy our collaborative dishes with Chef Danny Bowien, including a Wild Pacific Shrimp and Red Chile Pork Noodle Bowl in our Restaurants, and Pineapple Kimchi or Torn Cucumbers with Tingly Peanut Granola in our Specialty Coffee Bars.

Danny Bowein

Born in South Korea, Danny was adopted as a child and raised in Oklahoma City, where he first began his journey for connection and self-discovery through food. At the age of 19, Danny left Oklahoma and moved to San Francisco. He got off the plane, jumped on a bus and, before he’d even seen his apartment, was eating kimchi for the first time in his life. After graduating culinary school, he worked in various kitchens, where he learned to make sushi rice and slice hamachi before he wound up at Farina in the Mission. It was his learnings at Farina that led him to become the World Pesto Champion in 2008.

After Farina, his journey led him to cooking pop-ups at Lung Shan, co-founding Mission Chinese Food in San Francisco and founding two more locations in New York. In 2013, Danny was awarded Rising Star Chef by the James Beard Foundation. Danny’s never-ending pursuits are fueled by the similarities found across cuisines and have helped evolve the standards of what it means to be a chef.

In addition, customers are also invited to join Danny for a dinner inspired by his cookbook Mission Vegan: Wildly Delicious Food for Everyone at select Nordstrom restaurants. Each ticket is $100 and includes a four-course prix fixe vegan dinner and beverage pairings, along with a copy of the cookbook, which he’ll sign during the event. To RSVP or for more information, customers can visit any of the following Nordstrom locations:

  • May 18: Nordstrom Oakbrook Center at Ruscello on 6-8pm; (630) 218-2410
  • May 25: Nordstrom Downtown Seattle at The Grill from 6-8pm; (206) 628-1610
