Nordstrom to Close University Mall Store in Orem, Utah

OREM, Utah, Nov. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --

Nordstrom today announced plans to close its University Mall store in Orem, Utah. Originally opened March 29, 2002, the 122,000-square foot store will close to the public at the end of business on February 24, 2012.

The company will continue to operate at three nearby locations: a full-line store at Fashion Place Mall in Murray, Utah; the Sugar House Rack in Salt Lake City; and the Commons at South Towne Rack in Sandy, Utah. In addition, the company will be opening a new Nordstrom store at City Creek Center in Salt Lake City on March 22, 2012.

"After 10 years of being part of the Orem community, this was a tough decision to make," said Blake Nordstrom, president of Nordstrom. "Despite our team's best effort, this store hasn't ever performed to the level we need it to and it just doesn't make good business sense to continue operating here."

Though the closure impacts about 170 non-seasonal employees, Nordstrom anticipates that with the number of nearby stores, those employees who want to continue on with the company will likely have a position available for them.

"There's never a good time to close a store, but with our new store at City Creek Center opening, we felt this timing would give us the best opportunity to offer the Orem team positions at either the new store, our Fashion Place store or one of our two Rack stores," said Nordstrom. "We'll have a job for all of our non-seasonal employees who want to stay with Nordstrom."

For those eligible employees who won't take on roles at the other locations but stay with Nordstrom University Mall until closing, a severance package will be available.

"We thank the Orem community for 10 years of support," said Nordstrom.
