A PORTFOLIO BY GUS POWELL IN COLLABORATION WITH JOEL MEYEROWITZ CELEBRATING THE OPENING OF NORDSTROM NYC
As we look forward to the opening of Nordstrom NYC, we wanted to highlight the city and the people of New York. The latest campaign features real people – models and passersby alike – on the streets of New York.
Under the creative direction of Olivia Kim, VP or Creative Projects at Nordstrom, in collaboration with acclaimed street photographer Joel Meyerowitz and photographed by his protégé Gus Powell, the imagery presents new fall fashion in the context of real life in the city.
Meyerowitz got his start as an art director and started taking pictures after working with legendary photographer Robert Frank in the 1960s. A contemporary of Garry Winogrand, Diane Arbus, William Eggleston and others, Meyerowitz trained his unique eye on the city he knew and loved – New York – to capture some of the most celebrated photographs of the 20th century. His ability to capture the magical, candid moments of city life belies a great love of people and human connection, and it was with this kindred spirit in mind that Olivia Kim chose Meyerowitz to represent our brand for the season.
Meyerowitz, now 81, was inspired by the sentiment of An Open Mind is the Best Look and by the fact that Nordstrom NYC will open on Broadway, near the locations where many of his most memorable street photos were captured.
Gus Powell, shot photos up and down Broadway – one of the longest streets in the world – and on sides streets, park benches and boardwalks that together make up the canvas of city life. Meyerowitz’s daughter and granddaughter are featured in the campaign and a few of the images feature references to some of his most classic shots: a woman doing her make-up on a scooter while waiting at a stop light; a man walking down the street hugging a large poodle, while others are new expressions of moments in a day in the life of New York.
The campaign features the latest fall fashion from a wide range of brands including Balenciaga, Converse, Chloé, FRAME, Levi’s, Nike, Rag & Bone, Sies Marjan, Simone Rocha, Staud, Top Shop, Valentino amongst many others.
